Exodus 18:20 - 20 And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do.
Moses was a representative of God. God called him for a purpose and a reason. Moses had to teach and enlighten the people of God in four major areas.
1. The statutes of God
2. His laws and regulations pertaining to the statutes
3. The way the people had to live in the light of the statutes and laws.
4. The work they had to do.
God place his requirements and stipulations on those who were chosen to be His people. God called us to be holy and "set apart to Him and for His purpose". This was the plan for the people of God in the time of Moses but it is also for us who are His children. God intends His people to be distinguished in nature and in character from the world. This is why we as believers need to be excellent in our ministry. We are in this world but we are not from this world. We need to be different in the way we think, the way we act and the way we live. This needs to be visible in our lives and this will glorify Him. We need to know that God deals differently with us than those still in the world.
Exodus 19:5-6 - Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel."
We need to know who we are in Jesus. We need to know what Jesus has done for us. We need to rely on the blood of Jesus and need to know that the blood will protect us from evil. We need to obey God's word. Then you will become His treasure. These words were given to Moses and apply to us today as well. As believers we need to be rulers which God intended us to be. His original plan was that we rule the earth. As rulers we need to be god fearing, trustworthy and honest. This will make us excellent.
The original plan which God had in mind was to be a Holy nation. This He had in mind for His people. This plan is also for believers like you and me. This was to set people apart from the world. The Lord wanted them and us to be an example. They needed to be dedicated to the Lord and to His service and to indwell in His presence and He also requires it from us.
God called Moses for a purpose. God selected Moses to deliver his people. He had to go to Egypt where the Lords people were in bondage for many years. The Lord gave a plan to Moses to get His people out of bondage and slavery. This was the great exodus from Egypt. At Mt. Sinai they stopped.
God called Moses to go up the mountain. We read this in Exodus 19, 24 +25. When they were at Mt. Sinai, Moses had to go up the mountain. "Go to the top of the mountain". Moses had to go up the mountain to receive instruction. The tabernacle was a dwelling place that was sacred, dedicated to God for His presence. Moses received the plan and pattern for its instruction and furnishing when he was on the mountain. He was at Mt. Sinai where he received the Law. It involved 613 commandments, the instructions for building the Tabernacle and the assignments of the priestly duties. The Lord also gave him instruction of their journey. After this occasion Moses will go again up the mountain. Mt. Sinai represents the place where Moses received instruction and gave him preparations for their journey. This was an instruction or command and here you will also receive instruction from the Lord for your journey in life.
Exodus 33:3 - Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people."
Moses remembered these words which the Lord gave him when he send out the 12 spies to spy on the land and when he will be on the top of the mountain at Pisgah.
Numbers 13:2 - "Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them."
Here we see that Moses gave them the instruction. The instruction was clear. Moses sent out 12 spies. 10 spies came back and saw the big giants and gave a bad report. They had a negative report as opposed to the positive report from Caleb and Joshua. They were looking at the people. Did they really see and complied too the instruction that was given to them? Only two came back and gave a good report. They saw the land. They wanted to take possession of it immediately. They also know that the Lord will be with them. They said there is a land full of milk and honey. They had a different outlook. Their focus was different in comparison to the other 10 spies. They had a different perspective. They were ready to go and take the land. They were ready to possess the land. This resulted in severe chastisement. From this we can learn the profound consequences that can sometimes happen or develop from being faithless and negative. When God speaks a promise we need to respond with optimism and not pessimism. The repeated grumblings of the Israelites even in the light of God's continuous provision show us the need to maintain an attitude of thankfulness to God even when we have great needs.
When they were busy with their journey they were in a valley. They were in the wilderness. Even here we see that the Lord still care for His people.
Numbers 21:16-17 - From there they went to Beer, which is the well where the LORD said to Moses, "Gather the people together, and I will give them water." Then Israel sang this song: "Spring up, O well! All of you sing to it-
Here we see four truths from this portion in the scriptures.
1. God give an instruction - Gather the people together - when people gather together you will find power and unity when they gather corporately.
2. God give a promise - I will give them water - This really means that they will receive life.
3. The people will respond with a song - the people started to sing and glorify God.
4. Lesson for us - in times of pressure, anxiety, depression, etc. we cannot be alone. We need to be amongst people of the Lord and praise and worship will bring a wonderful outcome.
Deuteronomy 34:1-5 - Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the South, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then the LORD said to him, "This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your descendants.' I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there." So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.
Nebo was a mountain east of the north end of the Dead Sea. There is a viewpoint 3640 ft from which it is possible to see as far north as Mt. Hermon as well as the Dead Sea and the Negev. Pisgah was one of the peaks of the Nebo mountain range. It is believed to be the highest point. Moses went to the top of Pisgah. Moses is here on top of the mountain and the Lord showed him the Promised Land. The Lord allowed him to see this land.
1. Pisgah is a place of instruction.
When Moses went up the mountain at Mt Sinai he received instruction from the Lord. The Lord gave him a detailed plan to build the tabernacle. He also gave him the Law which was engraved on the two stones.
2. Pisgah is a place of His presence.
When you are in his presence where you can praise Him and worship Him then you will forget about your circumstances. Paul and Silas praised the Lord when they were in jail when the Lord provided and opened the prison doors for them. When Moses returned from the mountain his face was shining. The people around you will know that you were in His presence. They will see it on your face. They saw it on the face of Moses.
3. Pisgah is a place of revelation.
When Moses was on the mountain he saw what the Lord planned. He saw the tabernacle in a vision and he built it accordingly to the vision. You will also receive revelation from the Lord when you are there.
4. Pisgah is a place where you receive words of Power.
When David stood in front of the giant he spoke to him in words that the Lord gave him. These words were words of power. He won the battle here already.
5. Pisgah is a place where you receive the ability and power to overcome.
When Caleb stood before the people and gave them the good report. He said that they should go up and take possession of the land for they will be "able" to overcome it. They will receive power to overcome. They will receive the ability to overcome.
6. Pisgah is a place from which you may see.
Sometimes it is necessary to see the enemy and work out a plan to defeat him.
7. Pisgah is a place of victory.
When Joshua was fighting with the Amalekites in the valley, Moses watch him and the battle from the mountain. He had some people around him. When the hands of Moses was dropping they started to loose the battle. So they keep his hand in the air. When they got tired they got a plan and they put stones under the arms of Moses to keep it up.
8. Pisgah is a place where you see spiritually.
Here Moses saw the Promised Land. He had a glimpse of the place and the land which God promised him. Here you can see what God has in mind for you, spiritually. Here you can see your place of destiny. Here you can see what God has in mind for you. You will see the purpose which God has created you for. You will see your purpose of living.
9. Pisgah is a place where you can look down on the wasteland.
When you feel that you are in a place where you are stuck, you are at a place where you feel surrounded by your circumstances and it looks so hopeless. You feel defeated. You feel depressed. You feel there is no other place to go - there is only one option, to go up the mountain.
Mt Sinai.
Mt Sinai is the place which represents the place of instruction and preparation.
Wilderness.
This is where the journey took place. This is also the valley. Mt. Hor or the wilderness is the place which represents the journey. The people of Israel were wandering around. They traveled through the wilderness. The wandered around till most of the generation were dead. Because of unbelief an entire generation spent their lives wandering aimlessly. They never got any meaning out of life. Their environment was not pleasant. Their lives had no destiny. They traveled for 40 years.
Mt. Nebo.
Mt. Nebo is the place where you are at the gate. You will face new problems. There are different tasks. But at this place you can see what is planned for you. You can see from high up all the things that hindered you. You can even look at the places where you wondered around. You can also see when the enemy wants to attack you.
See it with your eyes.
When Moses was on top of the mountain and he saw the Promised Land. He saw the land of milk and honey. This was the land which the Lord promised to the patriarchs. In Hebrew the phrase "to see it with your eyes" was a symbol of acquisition by which property became legally that of the viewer. (Gen 13:14 & 15). Hereby Moses accepted from God ownership of the Promised Land on behalf of all Israel. It is time that you also see with your eyes your promised land. Do not let the enemy rob you from that "promised land". Do not allow the enemy and his works stop you from entering your promised land. See it with your eyes and take possession of it.
The Spirit of the Lord is speaking to you now. The Spirit is showing you where you are. You might still be in a spiritual Egypt. You might be still in bondage and a slave caught up in a worldly system. You might feel that it is hopeless. You might be at Mt. Sinai. This is the place where you need to get instruction for your journey. You might be in the wilderness. You might be wandering around and take it as it comes. Sometimes you wander if it is worth it and you sometimes wander when it is going to end. God is calling you to rise up. Rise above your circumstances. Yes, God calls you to go up the mountain too. We also need to go up the mountain. There is only one option. There is no other option for the flesh. God is greater and we need to remember this.
God say today He heard your cry. He heard your prayers. God say I am with you. God say it is time to move on. You need to focus on the truth. Are you prepared to face the giant? Are you ready to face your giant and move on? Your giant is in the way. It is time to rise up. Rise up and face your giant.
Rise up. Come into His presence. You do not need to stay in the valley anymore. Come out of it. Say farewell to the wilderness. See what the Lord have in mind for you. Discover your promised land. Discover and see what is available for you and take possession of it.
Do you want to enter through the gate to your promised land or do you want to go on the way you did before? Moses saw the land - The Promised Land - The land of milk and honey.
You and I are at a place today. I know where I am. Do you know where you are? Have you identified it? You are at a place where you need to make a decision. What will it be?
