Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth

The Bible MUST be rightly divided in order for it to make sense. Notice what it says: "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, RIGHTLY DIVIDING the Word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15).

This is one of the fundamental rules for interpreting the whole Bible. Neglect of this rule or a faulty use of it will lead to only one result, CONFUSION, since our God is not the author of confusion, we should rightly divide the the Word of truth.

This is not only a "nice statement" in the Bible, Paul said that, and if he found it necessary to say we should rightly divide the Word, it is possible to wrongly divide the the Word.

To get our doctrine straight we have to "rightly divide the Word of truth". We should ask ourselves some questions.

  1. Who is speaking?

  2. To whom is he speaking?

  3. About whom is he speaking?

  4. In what time frame is he speaking?

  5. About what (context of the conversation)

  6. Are there any witnesses? - 2 Corinthians 13:1 - This will be the third time I am coming to you. "By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established."

The entire Bible is for us, but the entire Bible is not about us. There are other groups of people. Paul clearly mentioned three groups of people in 1 Corinthians 10.

1 Corinthians 10:31 - 33 - Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

Here I want to clarify the "names" of the three groups of people.

  1. Jews - Where does the name Jews come from? Let us look at what the Bible calls this group of people.
    Hebrews or Israelite:
The term Israelite comes from the name Israel, which was conferred upon Jacob, grandson of Abraham, and father of the 12 Tribes, after his victory over the angel, with whom he "struggled". From a historical perspective, the name "Hebrew" has been in use since the time of Abraham, and "Israelites" followed when the sons of Jacob developed into a nation. Conversely, "Jew" (Yehudi) was popularized in the era of the Persian exile - at which point the Israelites not under Judean rule had become steeped in idolatry and exiled forever - and all the remaining Israelites (even those not from the Tribe of Judah) were known as Jews. It is only in recent years that the word "Jew" surpassed the word "Israelite" and "Hebrew" as the preferred English designation for members of the the people of God.

What did the original Scriptures said?
    Paul called himself a Hebrew.
Philippians 3:5 - circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, in regard to the law, a Pharisee
    Paul called his people Israelites.
    Romans 9:3-5
:3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh,
    :4 who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises;
:5 of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.
2 Corinthians 11:22 - Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I.

  2. Greeks, also refer to as Hellenists in the Bible.
ACTS 6:1 - Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution.
The "Hellenists" were unbelievers as well as the Christian converts among the Hebrews who had returned to Judea after having lived abroad in the Greek world. Despite being Hebrews, the Hellenists had adopted Greek cultural elements and spoke Greek. "The Hebrews" in this verse are the Christian converts among the Hebrews who were born and raised in Israel.

  3. Church of God = G1577 = ekklēsia = ἐκκλησία = the whole body of Christians scattered throughout the earth.

Let us now look at the origin of the three groups of people.
God made man kind in Genesis and that was only called "man", mandkind or the human race.
Then after the flood, Noah came out of the ark.
Genesis 8:15 - 16 - Then God spoke to Noah, saying, "Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons' wives with you.
Genesis 8:18 - So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him.
Genesis 10:1 - Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood.
Genesis 10:32 - These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations, and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood.

From the sons of Noah came 70 nations.
This first time that the word "nations" is mentioned in the Bible is in Genesis 10.
Nations = H1471 = Goyim = People, non-Hebrew people.
Until Genesis 12 there was only one group of people called the nations.

Genesis 12:1 - 3 - Now the Lord had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

God took one man from the Goyim and He made a new nation, the Israelites also called the Hebrews.

There were only two groups of people until the church was born. (The day when Jesus arose from the dead). After the church was born, we now have three groups of people.

Let us read 1 Corinthians 10:32 again, but use the correct names of the three groups of people.
"Give no offense, either to the Hebrews or to the Greeks (Goyim in Hebrew) or to the ekklēsia of God"

When we read the Bible we should "rightly divide the word of truth" by asking ourselves some questions and we receive knowledge from and of God.
John 8:31 - 32 - Then Jesus said to those (Jews) Hebrews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
It is one thing to know the truth, but it is another thing to be obedient to the truth we know.
Hosea 4:6a (The Israel Bible p1339)
My people is destroyed because of (your) disobedience! Because you have rejected obedience, I reject you as My Kohrn.

Notes (The Israel Bible p1339) Da'at Elokim is translated here as "obedience to Hashem", but literally means "knowledge of Hashem".

What does this mean?
Directly translated and understand it as it is written in the original is:

My people are destroyed for lack of obedience. Because you have rejected knowledge of God, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.
