The Heritage of the Righteous

Psalm 37:18
The LORD knows the days of the upright, and their inheritance shall be forever.

We have many promises in the Word of God and each promise is for us the children of God, the "upright". When we read the Word of God we will also see that each promise has a condition. We have to live according to the Word of God and the conditions to receive these promises from God.

In Psalm 37 we see this great promise of our heritage in the Lord. As the righteous of God through Jesus we have a great future and a rich heritage. We have to live according to the instructions of the Word and we find seven in Psalm 37.

  1. Trust

To trust in the Lord is to believe that He is our refuge. We have complete confidence in Him. We must actively, consciously trust that God's Word is true and that He always acts in accordance with it.

Every situation we encounter is an opportunity to choose to trust God rather than our own abilities. Trust involves some risk, but if we trust God, He will reward us.

We can trust God because He has a track record of integrity, honestly, faithfulness, goodness, love and much more. God is trustworthy. The word trust means to entirely put our confidence and faith in Him, to lean on and to rely upon Him. The scripture tell us to do this with ALL of our heart.

  2. Delight

    Psalm 112:1
Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in His commandments.

When we delight in the Lord and His commandments we take pleasure and are favorably disposed toward God. God find us His children a delight and very attractive in His view. In Psalm 112 we see that we can be blessed by the fact that we find God's commandments pleasurable, attractive, delightful, pleasing and desirable.

  3. Commit

We have to consciously commit ourselves and our plans to the Lord daily. The Word commit really means to "roll down", "roll away" or "remove". The Word of God encourages us to "roll" our ways into God's care. We can remove all pressure from ourselves as we commit our lives in the Hands of the Lord. He invites us to "roll" everything to Him. By doing that we clearly show our dependence and trust in Him.

  4. Rest

God's Word is commanding us to enter into His rest and then stay there.

    Hebrews 4:1
Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.

I have to admit entering into God's rest in not the easiest thing to do. It will take a quality decision on our side to do that. We can take the Word of God and stand on it. We can believe that God is in control and we can enter into His rest, knowing that He is at work on our behalves while we rest assure that He will never forsake us or leave us to struggle on our own.

  5. Cease

The word cease literally means "to let go" In this Psalm it then means "to let go of anger". In this day and ages it seems like "anger" is the only way people can express themselves. People react on impulse and anger is the result. Later after they have cool down, they normally realized that they have over reacted and sometimes they do not know how to redo what they have done in anger. It seems like this become a live style to some people and they do not even realize and are in denial about the fact that anger rules their lives. This is a very dangerous state to be in. God's Word clearly says "cease from anger". We have to make a decision to watch ourselves and by the help of the Holy Spirit "cease" from anger.

  6. Depart

This commandment in Psalm 37 comes through very strong to us. We have no choice but to depart and turn away from anything evil, anything which is in direct opposition to God.

But in this portion of Scripture we do not only get a commandment to depart from evil. But God is giving us the way out. He tells us how to do it. We can combat evil by doing good. Good overcomes evil. We can see this in Philippians 4:8. Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things. If we meditate on "good" we will end up doing good and by doing good we will combat and depart from evil.

  7. Wait

When we wait on the Lord we express the idea of "waiting hopefully". With expectancy we look to the Lord for the answers to our hope in Him. He will bring to pass everything He had promised.

To have patience and wait on the Lord does not mean that we except second best and that we will settle with anything that comes along.

Patience is a powerful word. It is to be consistently constant or to be the same way all the time regardless of what happens.

With the power of the Holy Spirit in us, we can have patience and wait on the Lord. We do not ever have to accept anything less that victory while we wait because the One we are waiting on is faithful and true and we can depend on Him.

The correct way to hope and wait on the Lord is to steadfastly expect His mercy, His salvation and His rescue. And while we wait on the Lord we should not take matters into our own hands, we must trust in God.

Doing what God's Word commanded to us, we will have a future in the Lord. In this Psalm the thought "dwell in the land" or inherit the land is mentioned eight times. Eight being the number of new beginnings shows us that when we act on the Word of God we can have a new start in live and our future in secure in the Lord.
